I'm Not a Hippie!

I was talking to a woman the other day about my son's amber teething necklace and a random assortment of other small talk when she says, "What are you, some kind of new-age hippie?" She then laughed as if she had just come up with a joke that would blow George Carlin out of the water. I, on the other hand, was not nearly as amused. Me, a hippie? A HIPPIE?!

Sure, I DO use cloth diapers for the sake of the environment and my budget. And yes, I clean with vinegar instead of chemicals and try to use rags and washcloths instead of paper towels whenever possible for the same reasons. And so what if I like to walk around barefoot, even when I'm outside? Most flipflops are just another method of Chinese torture to me. And honestly - who doesn't love a good granola bar once in a while? Perhaps the healing power of stones isn't everyone's cup of tea but I do believe the amber has made a difference with my son, at least on a small scale. And...ok....I DO implement gentle discipline, I wore my kids in wraps and back carriers, I cosleep, and I tend to ignore the CDC vaccination guidelines in favor of my own schedule. And I will freely admit that my favorite color is rainbow, because I believe in giving every color a fair shot, and that my favorite animated movie growing up was "The Last Unicorn". Peace is a pretty awesome thing, and will gladly honk at anyone with a big sign that says so. And, come to think, it sometimes does take me a day or two (or three) to find time to take a full shower....and when I wake up sometimes my hair does resemble a frizzy dreadfro (a cross between an afro and dreadlocks)....

Huh....

Ok, ok, maybe she has a point. Maybe I AM a new-age hippie?

  2. I think the fact that you call yourself a Common Goddess also lends to the new-age hippie vibe -- just sayin'. But at the same time, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a hippie. I like to think I have some hippie-specific tendencies that I'm absolutely proud of! :)

  3. I do a lot of the same things as you!! I love my sons amber necklace!! And speaking of my son, he'll be 2 in Oct and has awesome "long", curly hair!! I put long in quotation marks because I don't think it's that long, in the back it's at the bottom of his neck and the sides are closer to his chin, but it's all curly and just so adorable!! He get's mistaken for a girl(even in total boy clothes sometimes!) and I get called a hippie ALL.THE.TIME. I embrace it! Although I wish some of things I do, like care about our environment and gentle discipline didn't make me a hippie and more people cared, but thinking that probably makes me even more a hippie! LOL Oh well I'm just trying to spread the peace!! :D

  4. Alex, I wish you knew my friends here in the KC area because you share the same beliefs as they do as far as raising their kids! I don't think you are a hippie because your kids are in cloth diapers and wear amber necklaces. More power to you for patience in cleaning cloth diapers!!!! LOL. The amber necklaces as my friend Angela described it as... it's supposed to "protect and keep the child at peace." There is nothing wrong with that! Besides, I think it's pretty--even if it's for the boys... My friends here all have boys and they all wear them. I don't know if that makes you as a new age hippie or times are changing. I'd say times are changing but then again, most of my friends are just now getting married or starting to have kids. I also say it makes you awesome!
